Understanding the Culture War- For Busy People

Domenick J. Maglio, Ph.D. Neo-Traditionalist

Many people are too busy with everyday life to notice the increasing tolerance of immoral behavior. Perhaps the average American missed Justin Timberlake simulating stalking Janet Jackson onstage and then exposing her breast in Super Bowl 38 or the hedonistic MTV programming or the violent lyrics of Rap music or the graphic sexual content of PG-13 movies or the banning of Christmas and the Ten Commandments in our courthouses or the National Basketball Association thugs fighting with fans in the stands or our children yelling at their parents and acting and dressing like freaks. Can anyone argue that this does not constitute visible evidence of moral decay? How far can you go before you know enough is enough?

This is the Culture War. It is raging. It is not generated by Republicans or Democrats nor is it a figment of our imagination. It is not solely a religious war though religious belief is a component of it. Political policy is another part of it. In this new era minority rights often supercede majority rights in the same manner perpetrator's rights supplant victim's rights. Political correctness is forcing law-abiding citizens to censor their speech and thought. The family, marriage and common decency are systematically being demeaned. The Culture War is being fought simultaneously on many fronts and is having a devastating impact on the American Way.

One approach to comprehend the scope of this war is to contrast the two distinct cultural viewpoints and their consequences on American citizens.

  • Family is obsolete vs. remaining the best social unit.
  • Parents attempt to befriend their children vs. training the child.
  • Employees are avoiding work or socializing vs. doing the job well, "the customer is always right".
  • Students are unwilling or complete basic assignments vs. taking pride in academic learning.
  • Being non-judgmental makes a person better vs. being ethical and moral requires people to be intolerant of destructive behavior.
  • Teachers are imitating the dress and behavior of their students vs. role modeling dignified behavior.
  • Schools drug children into submission vs. enforcing good study and behavioral habits
  • Sexual liberation brings freedom, independence and happiness vs. being a sacred act.
  • Women have a right to their own bodies vs. aborting is murder.
  • Judges legislate from the bench to promote their social agenda vs. adhering to the law
  • Wedding planning lasts longer than the marriage vs. committing for a lifetime.
  • Friendly divorce is not harmful vs. being devastating for the family.
  • Quality time is enough vs. spending quantity time cannot be replaced by quality time.
  • Isolated "cave people" seldom emerge from their mammoth homes vs. being involved in the community..
  • Christmas is censored for the majority not to offend a few vs. celebrating as an historical religious expression of the majority
  • Illegal aliens are entitled to the services and rights of US citizens vs. earning US citizenship.
  • Universities indoctrinate students with Marxist ideals and revisionist history vs. teaching students accurate facts and logical, critical thinking.
  • Individual physical and psychological pain is sedated vs.learning from the adversity of life.
  • Evil does not exist today vs. dealing with evil on a daily basis.
  • Cynicism is politically correct vs. being patriotic is wholesome.
  • The assault is being led by "Smugger" elites. These elites are smug in their attitudes as they mug traditionalists of their moral values. Although the majority of Americans believe in traditional values, many are unaware of what is going on or numb from these attacks. The degree and frequency of these clashes are increasing in intensity and impacting every aspect of our nation. How do you know you are in the Culture War? Open your eyes. Just observe what is happening around you.

It is time to take the time to survey the battlefield. If you want the world of the Smugger elite, you can relish the irresponsibility of morally barren hedonism, self-absorption and instant gratification for the short run. Eventually it will lead to vulnerability to terrorism, chaos and disintegration of our country into a third world nation.

If you do not believe in this direction for our country, choose to live right and stand up in every situation for our traditional moral values. Concerned Americans cannot put their heads in the sand, live in a protective bubble and be unwilling to recognize the Culture War. It is time to stop being politically correct and say what is on our minds. The choice is ours.
